MARRIAGE , MEN AND WOMEM, ART, DIVORCE AND FAME KIM GORDON'S GIRL IN A BAND
MARRIAGE , MEN AND WOMEM, ART, DIVORCE AND FAME
KIM GORDON'S GIRL IN A BAND
Many words have been written about Kim Gordon's memoir book "GIRL IN THE BAND". Her life before during and after SONIC YOUTH. Many of them particularly by male critics have been subtly critical of her telling her personal truth about her life with and with out her ex husband and band mate Thurston Moore. Too many times critic have expressed her aloofness and called her cold . I suggest because she did not participate in the usually unauthentic, fake intimacy of critic and artist so much of what pop culture journalism basked in . I will admit to being sad when SONIC YOUTH broke up . I knew the members of the band some better than others but would not claim to be an intimate friend of any of them. We shared personally certain cultural values that in the art world resonated a resistance to the codification of almost everything by capital (my words not hers) , I always believed we saw each other in a room uncluttered with fantasy and fame. You know we lived in the same location of cultural landscape. Sara Marcus has written the most insightful review I have seen of Gordon's book , I suggest you read the review and most importantly read Kim Gordon GIRL IN A BAND . What I like best is in Gordon is her he willingness to speak directly from her experience without ever romanticizing her role. Here are two quotes form Marcus' review that are sticky : "Maybe true power lies not in managing to have it all, whatever that means, but in how one reacts when things come undone." And "Let me also say Gordon's writing is much like her singing, deadpan and spacious" Divorce is a devastating moment for a couple. Women still no matter how smart or "feminist"are, still, in my experience, suffer the most ... a class distinction based on cultural definitions of male and female . Note : I still respect both Kim and Thurston as artists and it is not my place to make a personal judgement on their private life except to gain insight in male/female relationship and how now in same sex marriage the challenge and perhaps the insight on how same sex couples navigate the ruptures in trust that sexual and emotional betrayal provided they do not just imitate heterosexual marriage.

(1) Jim Fouratt - STEVEN W. THRASHER HAS WRITTEN A PROFOUND INSIGHT...
STEVEN W. THRASHER HAS WRITTEN A PROFOUND INSIGHT INTO HOW RACISM WORKS I read this profound articulation of the internalized power of racism as inflicted on a human being by another human being either individually or collectively. It made me reflect in a very personal way how not to distance myself from the other and to commit to individual and collective action to combat racism and racial violence. It made me realize that empathy and compassion are necessary in the fight against racism, but I will never know what it is like to be a black person dealing with the ordinary daily practice of racism and the impact it has on all people particularly our young women and men of color that starts in children . A first step is to find in my life those circumstances that resonate my difference and the consequences of someone else's almost irrational judgement expressed by both dismissal and powerful yet ordinary behavior , For me it is called homophobia despite what I am told about the incredible progress since that day in 1969 when lesbian and gay people in New York City found inside themselves the courage to rise up and threw off the psychic restrains and emotions that homophobia subtle or brutal practices. The essential need to heal oneself and fight back. Black Lives Matter has deeper meaning when I locate inside of me that which seeks from outside and yes inside the chockhole of homophobia to limit and or frighten me and my imagination , creativity and sometimes simple survival . PLEASE READ < THINK ABOUT WHAT THRASHER IS SAYING AND SHARE
