John Berger or The Art of Looking (2016)
This is the last know interview that John Berger gave before his death in the alps on January 2, 2017. His gift to all of us was to open our imaginations and most importantly our eyes
Published on Nov 7, 2016
Art, politics and motorcycles - on the occasion of his 90th birthday John Berger or the Art of Looking is an intimate portrait of the writer and art critic whose ground-breaking work on seeing has shaped our understanding of the concept for over five decades. The film explores how paintings become narratives and stories turn into images, and rarely does anybody demonstrate this as poignantly as Berger.
Berger lived and worked for decades in a small mountain village in the French Alps, where the nearness to nature, the world of the peasants and his motorcycle, which for him deals so much with presence, inspired his drawing and writing.
The film introduces Berger's art of looking with theatre wizard Simon McBurney, film-director Michael Dibb, visual artist John Christie, cartoonist Selçuk Demiral, photographer Jean Mohr as well as two of his children, film-critic Katya Berger and the painter Yves Berger.
The prelude and starting point is Berger's mind-boggling experience of restored vision following a successful cataract removal surgery. There, in the cusp of his clouding eyesight, Berger re-discovers the irredeemable wonder of seeing.
Realised as a portrait in works and collaborations, this creative documentary takes a different approach to biography, with John Berger leading in his favourite role of the storyteller.
Director: Cherie Dvorák

WHOSE STREETS?
I wish I could have had everyone I have every ran in the streets with trying to make a better world from the days Gay Liberation Front and the Anti-War movement in the 1960s to this year with Gays Against Guns and Rise and Resist, sitting with me on opening night of the Sundance Film Festival and the world premiere of WHOSE STREET. An honest look at what actually happened in Ferguson Mo after Michael Brown was murdered by the Ferguson police. How the community that actually lived there.reacted. WHOSE STREET is truth telling from the actual people who participated rather than a 90sec news spot. For me, it was the perfect film to see on the night before DTs inauguration. We can if we work together still make a better world despite whatever obstacles are put in front of us. History teaches that it is and has been possible. So to all of you in DC keep each other safe and know I am there in spirit. Here in Park City, UT home of the Sundance Film Festival, I will be participating in the locally organized WOMEN'S MARCH

SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL JAN 21st 2017 WOMAN"S MARCH in solidarity with the over 300 Women's marches WILL TAKE PLACE IN PARK CITY.CHELSEA HADLER i will join local women, men, kids and festival attendees
SUNDANCE 2017: I will be in Park City Utah attending the Sundance Film Festival while some of you will be in DC on the 20th and 21st participating in the DC actions
against the Trump agenda, Some of you will be in your hometown marching together in your local WOMEN'S MARCH. I will join with local women in Park City who have organized in solidarity with over 300 Marches in the US A WOMEN" S MARCH TO PROTEST THE TRUMP AGENDA, AND IT'S ATTACK ON A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CONTROL HER OWN BODY! AND THE DEFUNDING OF WOMEN"S HEALTH CLINICS.
Chelsea Handler is speaking, and I are surely many other women and men attending SUNDANCE will join in. I know I am.
Handler said, "Sundance has always been a platform for change: not only for filmmakers and filmmaking but also for big ideas for the future. If there's anything I learned in the last year, it's that we need to be louder and stronger than ever about what we believe in, so I joined some incredible women from around the country to bring our voices together in the streets of Park City. The Women's March on Main will be an opportunity for the creative community and those in Utah to stand beside those in D.C."
While this is not sponsored by the non-profit SUNDANCE INSTITUE the producer of the Sundance Film Festival, its founder Robert Redford I am sure will have something to say. The opening press conference will I suspect be the place he will say something
During the festival, a variety of related events will be taking place. I will be posting other events during Sundance that will be a response to the Trump agenda, And if there is a live stream I will post that info.
Here is the first one I know of and I am excited because Jehane Noujaim who directed THE SQUARE an Academy Award nominated and Sundance premiered documentary as well as CONTROL ROOM an insightful look inside of Al Jazeera

OPERA IS THE NEW BLACK Doubt in HD Trailer
The word Opera becomes like the word curator has been kidnapped by jobless Ph.D. candidates and has become devalued by their use of it to cover a mess of work. BUT but it is amazing to actually learn that contemporary musicians are border crossing and seeding and pruning new work that justifies the description OPERA... I think of Roddy Bottum (Imperial Teen, Faith No more ) and the preview of an opera he is working that was done as part of two nights of emerging opera composers at Roulette last year. I think of the young composers like Nick Hallett seeded by Meredith Monk and Philip Glass. I will at length in a separate post discuss contemporary opera in depth, But I wanted you to get a taste of work that you may be familiar with as an award-winning play and film: DOUBT: here is an excerpt: (remember heightened musical spectacle)
Fearless Meryl Streep's powerful speech at the Golden Globes (2017)
Made me proud to be a long-time member of the Actor's Unions (SAG_AFFTRA, AEA) ...For pointing out an actor's tools include empathy and compassion. Her defense of journalists was both appropriate and chilling Thank you, Meryl, for not being afraid.
